For the past 20 years, Dave has written the Speed and Smarts newsletter, has been a coach of both men and women at the highest level of sailing including coaching Olympic Gold medalist Anna Tunnicliffe, and has produced instructional videos for the sailing industry.

  • CleverPig.org (website of the Southport Sailing Foundation and now US Sailing). Designed and managed the implementation of the site
  • 1990 Sports Illustrated ‘Smallboat Sailing’, co-author with Brad Dellenbaugh
  • Davis Instruments Quick Reference Racing Rules Card

1985 to 1993 North Sails Worldwide Marketing Director 

  • North U Fast and Smart Courses – major revision and rewrite of manual and course
  • North U Cruising and One-Design Courses – created new manuals and courses
  • Scheduled and oversaw about 50 North U courses annually around North America
  • Created and produced the first-ever ad in the U.S. Rulebook (“Sail fast. Sail Fair.”)
  • Trim for Speed– Wrote, organized and co-produced this movie about boat speed
  • Helped organize and run the first-ever Yacht Racing Hall of Fame Regatta (circa 1982)

Olympic Coaching

  • Coached the team from 2010-2012 at training and regattas all over the world
  • Ranked # 1 in world for about 18 months, 2011 World champions, 2012 World Champion Runners-up
  • Two-time winner of ISAF World Sailing Cup
  • Two-year campaign was one of the most successful in US Olympic sailing history
  • Coach, US Sailing Team 2010-2011
  • Coached US match racing clinics and regattas
  • Coached several US Sailing Team clinics for Soling match racers in the 1990s

Youth Coaching

  • Started the Long Island Sound-based Optimist Team that evolved into LISOT
  • Coached teams that won the U.S. Youth World Championship Qualifier in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011
  • U.S. Team Leader and coach at the 2006 ISAF Youth World Championship
  • Coached Optimists, 420s, Lasers and 29ers at many local, regional and national regattas
