Kahl

19612021

Kahl was the epitome of the quintessential yachtsman. Sailing was his life and his passion and later his career. In 2006, Kahl combined his yacht racing experience, software coding skills and event management work. He launched Yacht Scoring, a regatta management platform that grew to include some 400 events in 2019. The company became the leader in online, real-time sailing event management for scoring, registration, and communication. Yacht Scoring is used by regattas around the world, impacting thousands of sailors each year. In addition to Bayview, Kahl was also a member of the Storm Trysail Club in Larchmont, New York, where he served on the board of governors from 2008-2009, and the Royal Ocean Racing Club, in London. He was the executive director of the US-IRC Foundation from 2008-2011 and served as the director of the Southern Ocean Racing Conference beginning in 2007.

No one can sum up Kahl’s qualifications any better than John Burnham (former editor of Sailing World. “It would be hard to name anyone who did more to advance the art of regatta management by moving it online than Luiz Eduardo Kahl, who died unexpectedly on September 25th in Detroit, Mich. His Yacht Scoring platform has served as the industry standard, the bar by which all other regatta-management programs are measured, for more than a decade. In addition to being a first-class technologist and accomplished sailor, it is virtually impossible to find anyone so universally well-liked as Luiz.”
