Melges III

1964 -

Melges is one of the most talented and accomplished sailors the United States and Wisconsin has ever produced. Melges’ gifts to sailing go far above his championships. He has been a friend, coach, mentor and connector with thousands of sailors and families all across the world.

His record as skipper is remarkable:

● M16 ILYA Champion
● E Scow ILYA- 5 Championships in a row, 7 total
● E Scow Nationals- 5 Championships in a row- 7 total
● Melges 24 National and World Champion
● 5.5 World Champion

The second and more critical accomplishment that Melges gave to the world of sailing was through a lifetime and smart, technical and innovative creation and evolution of sailing boats. He has always been the magical leader in the Scow Classes, building them through good and hard times. The A, E,C, MC, X,14,15,17 are just a few. The breakthrough in building the design, boats and classes for Melges 24, 20, 30, 32 have changed sailing worldwide. The Melges 24 is still the favorite for top pros and regular sailors and toughest Class to win. Think of all the smiles this man has created over his career.

Harry Melges has a record that would have gone on forever if he didn’t give up beating his customers and friends and building boats. His intensity blends with humor somehow, maybe that special DNA he shares with his Dad and son.
